Effective date: August 25, 2026
Dearplace ("the app") is developed by Michiel Stam ("we", "us", "our"). This policy explains what information the app handles and how, in plain language.
When you use Dearplace, you can create collections, places, notes, categories, and photos attached to places. This content is stored on your device and, if you are signed in to iCloud, synced privately to your other devices through Apple's CloudKit private database. It is stored under your own Apple ID and is not visible to us, to other Dearplace users, or to anyone else. We have no ability to view, access, or recover this data. Only you can, through your own iCloud account.
If you delete the app or turn off iCloud sync for it, your content remains only on the devices where it still exists locally, subject to Apple's own iCloud data retention behavior.
If you use the "Use current location" feature when searching for a place, the app asks iOS for your device's current location using Apple's Core Location framework. This location is used only to help you find nearby places and is not stored, logged, or transmitted to us. It is used locally on your device for the duration of that search.
Dearplace uses Apple's MapKit to display maps and to search for places. When you search for a place, that search is handled by Apple's map and search services, subject to Apple's own privacy policy. We do not receive or store your search queries.
If you use the "Paste from Maps" feature to import a place from a link you copied out of Apple Maps or Google Maps, the app reads that link directly on your device to extract the place's name and coordinates. No data is sent to us or to Google as part of this: the link is simply text you chose to paste, processed locally on your device.
Photos you attach to a place are chosen by you using Apple's system photo picker. The app never sees or accesses your full photo library. Only the specific photos you select. Selected photos are compressed on your device before being stored as part of your place's data, and sync the same way as the rest of your content, through your own iCloud account.
Dearplace lets you export a collection, or your full library, as a file so you can back it up or share it yourself (for example, by AirDrop, Messages, or email) using the standard iOS share sheet. This only happens when you choose to do it. We do not receive a copy of anything you export or share this way.
Dearplace is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Since the app has no accounts and no data collection by us, no personal data is transmitted to us regardless of the user's age.
If this policy changes, we'll update the effective date above and post the revised version at this same page.
